The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game in which players wager money on the outcome of a hand. The game can be played by two or more people, and it usually consists of several rounds. During each round, players place bets into a central pot. There are many different ways to play the game, and the rules vary depending on the variant.
At the beginning of each hand, one or more players make forced bets, called the ante and/or blind bet. The dealer then shuffles the cards, and the player to his or her right cuts. The dealer then deals each player two cards face-down. The dealer also deals a card to the center of the table, called the flop.
The players then take turns revealing their hands and betting. A player can call the current bet, raise it or fold, which forfeits his or her chance to win that round.
After the betting in the first round is complete, the dealer puts three additional cards on the board that everyone can use. These are called the community cards. The players then create their best five-card poker hand using the two personal cards in their hand and the five community cards on the table.
In most games, a poker hand must consist of at least a pair or better to be considered strong. A pair consists of two matching cards of the same rank. A flush is 5 consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., all hearts or all diamonds). A straight is 5 cards of the same rank in sequential order but from more than one suit.
