How to Play Online Poker
Poker is a family of card games, similar to the game of chess. It is played with a deck of cards, which may be either face up or face down. The player who has the highest hand after the betting round wins the pot.
Unlike many other card games, poker players use only their own money to bet. In some variations, players are allowed to place an ante, also known as a blind. If a player does not have enough chips to make an ante, he can go all-in and showdown his hand for the remaining chips.
There are three main types of poker: fixed-limit, pot-limit, and no-limit. Each type of game varies in the number of cards that are in play and in the way the cards are dealt.
Some variations of the game allow players to split the pot among the hands that have the highest cards. Other variations award the pot to the lowest hand. For example, stud poker awards the pot to the highest five-card hand.
All poker games involve one or more rounds of betting. Cards are dealt in clockwise order from the dealer to each player. A player may discard up to three cards. When all but one player has folded, the betting round is completed.
Most modern poker games feature a forced bet. Players are required to raise an amount of money from the previous bet. This can be a blind bet, an ante, or a forced bet.
